Richard W. Pryor II
Obituary for Richard W. Pryor II
Richard W. Pryor II, of Dover, Delaware, passed away suddenly on June 30, 2025. Known affectionately by friends and family as “Ricky,” he had just celebrated the 36th anniversary of his 29th birthday—a reflection of his humor and youthful spirit.
Born on May 24, 1960, at Kent General Hospital to R. Wayne Pryor and Thelma Attix Pryor, Ricky was a proud lifelong Delawarean. He began his education at the Little School and South Dover Elementary, graduating from Dover High School in 1978. He went on to attend Delaware Technical Community College (Terry Campus) and Salisbury State University, earning his degree from Wesley College in 1984.
Ricky was deeply committed to his community. He served on the Board of the American Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula, where he also chaired the Board Development Committee. He was a longtime supporter of the Kent County SPCA and its successor, the First State Animal Center and SPCA, serving on the Board Nominating Committee and organizing five major fundraising events.
His professional path began early, working weekends with his father at C&P Motors and later at Pryor Auto Sales. He also spent five summers working at Hickman’s Package Store for Dollie and Billo Hickman. In 1985, Ricky ventured into real estate, purchasing 32 rental units in Salem, New Jersey. Later in life, he returned to work alongside his father in the harness racing industry.
In the summer of 2024, Ricky joined Wharton’s Garden Center, initially helping out in the gift shop and eventually becoming a valued sales associate—a position he held until his passing. He also served for many years with the Kent County Board of Elections, faithfully monitoring local polls.
Ricky is survived by his sister, Pam Williams, and brother-in-law, Larry Williams of Houston, Texas; three aunts, Clara Gravatt and Mary Joan Pratt, both of Dover, and Carol Towles of Smyrna; as well as a host of extended family and dear friends.
In accordance with Ricky’s wishes, there will be no service. A private burial will be held. A celebration of Ricky’s Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to:
