First State Animal Center and SPCA (FSAC & SPCA) Policy

We  accept unwanted animals as space permits and will maintain a waiting list of animals to be relinquished. As soon as space becomes available on our adoption floor, animals will be brought in to prepare them for adoption into forever homes.

As a non-profit agency we rely on donations from the public to support our efforts with lost, unwanted, adoptable and neglected animals. These donations are vital.

As always, the animals in the care of the First State Animal Center and SPCA are vaccinated against contagious disease, spayed or neutered, vaccinated against rabies, and microchipped prior to becoming available for adoption. If you have any questions about these changes, feel free to contact our customer service employees at 302-943-6032.

Overall, the majority of the animals surrendered to us are healthy and loving; and many of them have been adopted to forever homes. First State Animal Center and SPCA cannot however guarantee the health or temperament of any animal after it is adopted.  The new owner assumes all financial responsibility once the animal leaves our facility.

Since we are a privately-owned 501(C)(3) not-for-profit shelter, we can house the animals for as long as it takes for them to find their forever homes. We currently have 76 canine kennels, 65 feline kennels and a 4 stall horse barn. First State Animal Center and SPCA is the only shelter in the State of Delaware that can house and care for large animals.  We are contracted by the Delaware Department of Agriculture to hold stay/at large animals until they are claimed or relinquished to the shelter to which we will then adopt out.

The animals in our facility are loved and cared for by our dedicated staff and volunteers.
