Humane Education Program
The First State Animal Center & SPCA is dedicated in supporting the bond between people and animals by nurturing knowledge, compassion and respect toward all living things. Our Humane Education program offers children of all ages a unique hands on experience to learn about our shelter, the animals we help, and some important issues in animal welfare today. Our main focus is to teach children how to be safe around animals and how to properly care for them.
Shelter Tours
Shelter tours are a great way to learn more about the role of the FSAC-SPCA in your community. Tours are offered to youth groups, scout troops, and others. Each tour is approximately an hour in length and consists of:

An introduction to the FSAC - SPCA shelter
How to be a responsible pet owner
Pet overpopulation and the importance of spay and neuter
How kids can help the animals in their community
Meet some of the amazing animals and learn their stories
School Presentations
We offer a variety of different topics for school presentations depending on the ages of the students. A detailed presentation can be tailored to fit any need you may have. Educating today’s youth about respect and animal safety is our goal and we are happy to be able to provide a fun experience. A school visit will include canine partners if desired.
Projects
The FSAC - SPCA encourages students to choose animal welfare topics for their school projects such as papers, presentations and speeches, and welcomes opportunities to act as a resource. By choosing from a wide array of topics -- such as pet adoption, pet overpopulation, animal cruelty investigation, responsible pet ownership, and laws to protect animals, students will learn more about these areas as well as help educate others!
Please call 302-943-6032, ext 120 to schedule a shelter tour or school presentation. We ask that this be done 2-4 weeks in advance. Tours are provided free of charge; however, monetary and in-kind donations are always appreciated. Groups must make appropriate arrangements for individuals with allergies.
Summer Camp for Kids Ages 8-12 years old
Campers will learn about our center and its role in the community, explore animal related topics, enjoy pet crafts and go on a field trip. Best part, they will socialize with some of our adoptable animals! The cost is $160 per camper. Kids must wear sneakers and pack their lunch Monday-Thursday. Campers receive a t-shirt and enjoy a pizza party on Friday with their fellow campers.
